Jeep® Goes Green Even Further with Wrangler Environmental Impact Going Down By 15 Percent

Fiat Chrysler Automobile has consistently put it upon itself to keep monitoring and reducing the environmental impacts of the vehicles it produces. In these continued efforts, FCA reports its first completion of the latest Global Warming Potential (GWP) Analysis. This analysis involved the comparison of the new Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited with the previous generation vehicles. The good news for FCA and everyone all over the world is that this vehicle recorded an overall Global Warming Potential that is 15 percent lower than that of its predecessor.

According to Mitch Clauw, FCA Vice President and Head of Global Pre-Programs and Program Management, FCA always included the mitigation of environmental impact in all their processes. He referred to it as a baked-in consideration. The method of calculating the GWP improvement involved the use of standard software that examines several factors. These factors are associated with the designs of the vehicle, its production, and its on-road performance. The factors are:

  • Environmental impact of fuel production and delivery

  • Material use

  • Vehicle’s fuel consumption

The evaluation was carried out based on 150,000 miles of operation. FCA measured the improvements on this vehicle by comparing anticipated greenhouse gas emissions with those of other cars. The new Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited was compared with the previous-generation Wrangler Unlimited. This previous generation vehicle uses the Pentastar V-6 as its only engine. The new Wrangler Unlimited, on the other hand, comes with an available turbocharged l-4 engine that features engine stop-start.

The engine of the new Jeep Wrangler is one major factor for the reduction of harmful emissions from the vehicle. Also, the material choice in designing the car is a significant contributor to the new Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited’s further green performance. The reduction of the ferrous metal content from 64% to 54% and the increase of non-ferrous metal content from 12% to 20% proved useful. With this achievement, FCA has reduced its environmental footprint even more.
